The Financial Ombudsman Services (FOS) believes a campaign launched alongside changes made by the industry would boost consumer confidence.

Peter Hinchliffe, lead ombuds-man for general insurance at the FOS, voiced concerns that the sector is failing to do something concrete about its problems.

He said: "I am troubled by the idea that the sector knows why people have lost confidence with some products. If they know that, I am not sure selling or marketing those products even harder will make a difference.

"It may be more helpful to launch a confidence building campaign, alongside work done by the Association of British Insurers or the Association of Medical Insurance Intermediaries.

"That will work," he added.
