Fortis Life UK has announced enhancements to its Protection portfolio, including the addition of the Best Doctors service to its Critical Illness, Income Protection and Real Life Cover plans.

The most significant changes are to its YourLife Plan Critical Illness cover. Fortis has confirmed that customers who already hold YourLife Plan Critical Illness cover will benefit from this round of enhancements.

A new definition - Multiple System Atrophy - has been added to provide cover against this degenerative neurological disorder, while existing definitions have been improved as follows in order to make it simpler for customers to claim:

Coma: The requirement that life support systems must be in use for 24 hours in order to meet the definition has been removed.

Heart valve replacement or repair: The need for surgery to divide the breastbone in order to meet the definition has been removed.

Paralysis of limbs: The number of affected limbs required to meet the definition has been reduced from two to one.

Third degree burns: The definitions for burns to the face and burns to the body have been combined to it easier for customers to understand

The addition of the Best Doctors service to YourLife Plan Critical Illness, Income Protection and Real Life Cover plans at no extra charge will be made available to new and existing customers.

Fortis Life Managing Director Martin Werth commented: "These enhancements provide our customers with greater confidence that their claims will be handled fairly. The addition of Best Doctors' unique service is a reassuring benefit for customers at a time when they need it most, providing a second opinion on the condition and treatment. I have known Best Doctors for many years and their customer feedback has been fantastic."
