Brokers should ensure they inform their customers of the options available to them if they are suffering difficulties with mortgage repayments, according to Mortgage Next.

The firm says brokers should back the FSA’s campaign to increase consumer awareness of their financial options.

FSA research suggested one in five homeowners are concerned they will not be able to make their mortgage payments over the next twelve months.

Gemma Harle, managing director of Mortgage Next, says brokers can use the opportunity to diversify their business to offer worried consumers additional services.

“Brokers should consider how they can best keep their clients informed about the range of options available to them, which should not only include mortgage products but also additional services such as debt management support,” she says.

Mortgage Next says it has added to its range of alternative debt solutions for consumers that cannot remortgage in the normal way, including IVAs, trust deeds, debt management support and property disposal assistance.

Brokers can make referrals via the Mortgage Next website and a specialist debt adviser will provide clients with advice, paying a referral fee to the broker.
