FTSE climbs in early trading

The FTSE began positively on Thursday morning, climbing 53.9 points, or 0.95%, to 5,714.3.

Cairn Energy is doing the most to push the index into the black, and has climbed 125p, or 4.65%, to £28.11.

Compass Group, up 12.5p to 323p, and FirstGroup, up 21p to 565.5p have also made early gains.

However, the London Stock Exchange Group, is currently heading the loser’s table, having dropped 8p, or 0.64%, to £12.50.

Eurasian and Kazakhmys are the only other companies to have dropped share value so far on Thursday.

In the US, the Dow Jones finished Wednesday marginally down, having dropped 109.74 points, or 0.88%, to 12,422.86.

American Express led the loser’s table, dropping 2.15 points, or 4.53%, to 45.36, and was followed by GEN Motors and JPMorgan Chase.

However, there were positive days for Exxon Mobil, up 1.06 points, or 1.24%, to 86.26, Caterpillar, Alcoa, Boeing, and Johnson and Johnson, which climbed just 0.15 points to 64.70.

Japan's stocks fell the most in more than a week on concern manufacturers will join Fujikura Rubber in warning shareholders about lower profits as the US economy slows.

The Nikkei 225 Stock Average lost 102.05, or 0.8%, to close at 12,604.58.
