The FTSE rose 53.8 points, or 0.95%, to 5714.2 as Persimmon led gains. The house builder rose 51 points, or 6.92%, to 788.5.
Wolseley rose 26 points, or 4.93%, as analysts upgraded the building supplies company from neutral to sell.
Kingfisher fell 4.3 points, or 3.18%, to 130.8 after reporting a 19% drop in annual profits.
Copper producer Kazakhmys fell 40 points, or 2.49%, to 1566.
The Dow Jones fell 3.91 points, or 0.03%, to 12418.95 as Intel Corporation fell 0.41 points, or 1.88%, to 21.46. Boeing fell 1.38 points, or 1.81%, to 74.92.
General Motors rose 0.28 points, or 1.44%, to 19.76 while Alcoa rose 0.45 points, or 1.25%, to 36.48.
