The Prime Minister today pledges not to "let down" the people of Britain on the economy, but warns there is still danger ahead.
Speaking in London, Gordon Brown says the UK is at a crossroads in its response to the economic and financial crisis.
He says now is a crucial time to get policy right, and believes investment in green jobs, reduction in trade barriers and reform of the financial system can help return world growth to rates of 5% seen before the crisis.
However, getting it wrong could cost the world $6trn over the next four years.
"The progress we have achieved is no excuse to relax our vigilance or resolve," Brown says. "To turn aside now from the course we have set would be an error of incalculable proportions and would hurt our people, our businesses and our country."
He says fairness will be at the heart of Labour attempts to cut the Budget deficit, and signalled he would not give large inheritance tax handouts to a handful of wealthy estates.
Strong government and an unwavering resolve to protect economic growth will help steer Britain to recovery, he adds.
"There will be bumps in the road. And I believe the only way to overcome them is by displaying the same strength and resolve as we did during the crisis," the Prime Minister says.
"I will not let you down."
The latest Budget, widely seen as Labour's economic manifesto, is due on 24 March, just six weeks before the likely date of a General Election.

Brown stuff
This man is incredible. For his first 5 years he followed Tory spending policies; for the next 5 years he followed his own tax & spend policies and ruined the country, and the last 2 years he has spent throwing things at people. What a man to trust with the next 5 years. I'd rather vote for Homer Simpson.

"Brown will not let us down"
Bit late for that Gordon. Empty words count for nothing. You put us here! Have the decency to leave and let someone else sort it out.

Just a mo
I think some of the commentators may have missed a point or two: 1. Who in their right mind would wish to take on the bowl of sick that is the UK economy? If either Dave or Gormless think they can put it right they are living in cloud cuckoo land. 2. Gormless is by reputation a ‘workaholic’. If you look at him now compared to only five years ago he has visibly aged. He really looks knackered. 3. So what better solution than to let him in for another five years. The strain will probably finish him off – a just result! By which time perhaps the worst may be over and another government may actually be able to make some progress. 4. The other good outcome would be that the Tories would probably chuck out Dave for failing and no doubt Boy George would go back to the nursery. We might then actually have a prospective leader with a sensible cabinet who are worth something.

Fairness for all?
My three kids would like to query that point, At the proposed inception of the RDR they will be told that they must leave further education as Dad can't earn any money. Gordon's recession has forced the masses to forego advice as they have other priorities than paying fees for the advice they used to get without using disposable income.Never mind,at least we won't ever return to 'boom and bust'.Fairness,my arse!

Waste of a country
We are living in a society where we now put so much effort into not doing the job we are paid to do And the reason for all of this? The excessive and rapacious greed emanating from the very people we elected to run our society. And the route cause of this decay? Look no further than the unelected megalomaniac in no 10 downing street. Clinging onto power by the skin of his teeth and seeking to deceive the people of this once great country into electing him into office. I for one will be seeking a new life abroad if the general public are so gullible as to vote for this man and the fraudsters that fawn and grovel at his feet.
