Investment bank Nomura will advise the group of financiers eyeing a possible buyout bid for Manchester United Football Club (MUFC).

The company, which advised the Glazer family on its £800m takeover of the club five years ago, says it will "work closely" with the group calling itself the ‘Red Knights', as well as the Manchester United Supporters' Trust and other potential investors.

Goldman Sachs economist Jim O'Neill, lawyer Mark Rawlinson and financier Keith Harris are among those behind the Red Knights.

The Glazers' reign has been controversial, with many fans angered by the £700m debts Red Football, the club's holding firm, took on to finance the buyout.
