Financial skills will be assessed as part of GCSE maths from this year, the Chancellor has announced.

Financial capability has been taught as part of the non-statutory framework for Personal, Social, Health and Economic education (PSHE) in the school curriculum in England since 2008.

Financial capability, as a component of PSHE, will be a statutory subject in the curriculum in England from 2011.

"The Government believes that every child should learn personal finance skills in school so that they have the confidence and motivation to deal with the financial choices and challenges of adult life," the Treasury says.
