The Financial Services and Skills Council (FSSC) has appointed Liz Field permanent chief executive.

Field has been interim chief executive since October, but has been given the role permanently after the Council was required to recruit for the position following the renewal of its licence in March.

Prior to her role at the FSSC, Field was chief executive of the Council's predecessor organisations, latterly the National Training Organisation. She was previously head of organisational development at Gerrard, leading the incorporation of the business into Barclays Wealth.

She has also managed her own consultancy business helping financial services firms  implement change programmes, and coaching senior executives.

Field says: "The industry has made it very clear that we have an important role to play in attracting talent and developing skills to help ensure the UK remains the world's leading financial services centre.

"Having worked closely with the rest of the team to develop our new skills strategy, I am now looking forward to getting on with delivering a simpler more effective skills system that puts employers' needs at the heart of everything we do."

Chairman of the FSSC Trevor Matthews, who took over his role in April, backed Field's appointment.

He says:"Liz has already shown she has the ability and skills required to manage and motivate a diverse team and drive through strategic change.

"I have every confidence she will continue with this success and lead the team in delivering a new and improved sector skills council."
