Aviva's director of distribution development Stephen Gay has been named as the new director general of AIFA, replacing Chris Cummings.

Gay will also become director general of the AMI and Association of Finance Brokers (AFB).

He has more than 25 years' experience of the life and pensions market and intermediary distribution.

While at Aviva, Gay developed and launched the industry's first financial adviser academy. He also led Aviva's work around the RDR. He previously worked for Prudential and Standard Life.

Lord Deben, chairman of AIFA, AMI and AFB, says: "Stephen has an excellent understanding of the challenges and opportunities faced by advisers, including the tough economic climate and the ever-changing regulatory agenda.

"His experience will be vital to promote and protect our members. In AIFA, the IFA profession has a strong, united organisation that stands up for their interests.

"Stephen is well placed to lead our work and build on the significant contribution made by Chris Cummings and his team."

Stephen Gay says: "There is a fantastic opportunity here to build on AIFA's successes and to take the organisation forward through this transformational period for the industry. I am delighted that I have been selected to lead AIFA, AMI and AFB.

"All three organisations are now firmly at the heart of political, regulatory and policy discussions. I look forward to representing members' interests at such a critical time."

A start date for Stephen is still being agreed, but Cummings' last day will be next Thursday, 9 September.

What we really need to know is...

Many IFAs perceive they are fighting for their livelihoods and the continued ability to provide for their clients with the kind of service they have been doing over the last 20-30 years. What is needed is not a diplomat, seen many of those come and go have we not, but someone with experience at the front who has the drive, not because it's another role or stepping stone, but because they are passionate about IFAs as the top tier of customer advocate. We need a Churchill not a Chamberlain to represent us. Has Mr Gay IFA experience ? ... can I pretend to know what it's like to live on the front line just because I’ve watched a film about it ..I don’t believe one can ? In fact, given this is an IFA Assoc, can we know the IFA history of the senior people please, like we did for NFIFA ? Please let us see the full CV of the senior staff. Please let us see the mandate that AIFA is now going to work on.. what are the main issues and what are the desired outcomes, from AIFAs viewpoint now ?
