The Treasury Select Committee (TSC) has not yet made a decision on whether to call for a full evidence session on the RDR as it wades through a huge 203 separate submissions on the issue.

Submissions have come in from a wide range of interested parties including: the FSA, ABI, Adviser Alliance, threesixty, SimplyBiz, the CII, CISI, FSSC, Cazenove, Lloyds Banking Group, Scottish Widows and many individual IFAs.

The TSC has been calling for submissions to scrutinise the need for the rule change.

Interesting

Some interesting comments from some of the most unlikely places. I sense the wind may be blowing in our sails now and it will be interesting to see if the industry has the sway to curtail some of the activities of the FSA. Having just attended a session for sole practioners yesterday with the FSA, it was interesting to see that the rhetoric appears to be being toned down. For the first time ever I thought I saw human beings with whom you may be able to have a dialogue. However, they were not the hierarchy of the FSA, mere foot soldiers!

A huge??? number

203 is a pitifully tiny number. Look at all those advisers complaining on the various blog sites. The numbers who paid £200 to an abortive Judicial Review. Where were they? There are over 20,000 advisers. Individual advisers making a submission are not even 200; that’s about 1% - as many of the submissions are from trade bodies, providers, Networks and other hangers on. Those that did submit seem to be the usual suspects who are prepared to make an effort. Whatever their view – well done (I’m not praising myself here – just in case anyone gets the wrong idea! – I’ve just got a big mouth – as everyone knows). These are the people who are prepared to make an effort to have their points of view heard. As to the rest – a bunch of idle whingers – as we always thought. Being a genuine critic takes effort. What would it have said to the TSC if only 10% of advisers had made a submission – they would have been inundated with more than 2,000 responses. That would certainly have got them to sit up and take notice! If you end up disliking the result and you didn’t make the effort, then you have no one but yourself to blame.

RDR

It seems to me that if the powers that be want to change the behaviour of a whole industry financial incentives are more likely to work. Simply put if individual advisors or firms are not level 4 qualified charge them more to be licenced as they can be argued to be a greater risk. This would soon lead to most IFA's choosing to pass these exams at there own pace with a financial gain. It also will not drive good experienced advisors out of the industry. Seems obvious to me.

Brown's RDR

I read Nick Bamford's first because he has been presenting some outrageous views about the FSCS. Reading his stuff and you lose the will to live. Then I read SimplyBiz next and that made complete sense. It's good that voices like that are around. I always knew though that IFAs would be rooted out of the industry. It's the corner shop. It's the real human contact. It's past its sell-by date. Brown's RDR fanatics -show me a successful business model where retailers retail their products to retailers?

It is offensive for the CII to jump on the commission equals misselling band wagon. That means that even Nick Bamford, if he ever was actually an adviser and not just a business person, is guilty of misselling in the past. Equitable Life didn't pay commission, how many intelligent people were sold an Equitable Life policy? I do believe that the FSA introduced Stakeholder pensions (pensions that don't pay commission)because they believed that the public would either buy without advice or pay a fee. Just in case there's anybody out there that doesn't know, IT DIDN'T WORK and neither will RDR in its present form.
