Man found guilty of murdering former SJP adviser

A 35-year-old man has been found guilty of the murder of former St. James's Place investment adviser Geoff Kerr.

Kerr, who was employed by St James's Place Wealth Management in 2001 before becoming an appointed representative of the firm, was shot dead at his home in Templepatrick during an attempted robbery in April 2009.

Darren Kernohan had admitted firing the fatal shot but claimed he had done so accidentally during a struggle with the victim, reports the BBC.

However, the jury at Belfast Crown Court rejected this and found him guilty on Tuesday.

Last week, Martin Fleming, 51, was jailed for life after pleading guilty to 60-year-old Kerr's murder.

Three other accused had previously admitted lesser offences connected to the murder of Kerr, who was a gun enthusiast.

Testifying on Monday, Kernohan said he had hatched a plan with Fleming to break into Kerr's home to steal whatever weaponry he had.

He claimed he thought the Glock handgun he used to shoot Kerr was a replica.
