Tesco Bank has promised to refund customers who have lost out financially after it suffered technical problems with online accounts.

The problems emerged over the weekend, with some customers unable to access their accounts, and were exacerbated when the company's call centre became overwhelmed.

However, Tesco said the website is now "fully operational" and will deal with claims on a case-by-case basis, the BBC reports.

In a message to customers on its website, the bank said: "We want to apologise unreservedly to our savings customers who have experienced difficulties in accessing our online banking system in recent days.

"The problem has led to an increase in call volumes to our call centre and we have not been able to answer calls as quickly as you would expect, or we would like."

Tesco was in the process of moving accounts across from computers run by former partner RBS when the glitches emerged.
