Three senior Ombudsmen - including chief executive Natalie Ceeney - receive bigger annual pay packets than Prime Minister David Cameron.

The PM earns £142,500 a year, according to Downing Street figures while senior ministers are paid £134,565.

However, the FOS' Ceeney receives a hefty £190,414 a year, almost £50,000 more than Cameron.

Add to that her annual employer pension contribution of £28,392 and ‘other' benefits of £5,790 and her total pay is closer to £225,000, according to the FOS' figures.

Second in command Tony Boorman, who is principal ombudsman and decisions director at the FOS, earns £169,660 a year. This is about £25,000 - or the average yearly wage in the UK - more than the PM.

When Cameron took office last May he cut the £150,000 Gordon Brown earned in the role as a belt-tightening gesture amid the creaking public finances.

By comparison, an annual employer pension contribution of £19,456, and ‘other' benefits of £25,581 bump up Boorman's pay to £214,697, a total  19% higher than last year.

The last of the gang of three who earn more than the PM is principal ombudsman David Thomas.

Thomas' yearly salary is over £10,000 higher than David Cameron's, at £155,651. With his £19,456 pension and £4,770 sundries, Thomas' pay hits £179,877 although this is a cut of 7% on last year's figure.

The FOS is paid for by levies and case fees which businesses covered by the ombudsman have to pay by law.

That is so wrong

There are probably a lot of very talented people who would do the job (maybe more sucessfully) for half those salaries. Regulatory organisations such as this should be bound by some kind of charter to keep management costs to a minimum. So should charities. Its a bit nanny state to suggest this type of intervention, however the last few years experience on MPs, Government Bodies and Regulators prove that they cannot manage their own rewards. They need to be capped. I'll get off my large soap box now !

Really?

Whilst the article makes a good point, it really is a poor comparison. The PM has * Free accomodation * Final salary pension scheme * Free transport * Free healthcare * Vastly subsidised child education Need I go on? I think the PM's package is substantially more that FOS staff.

Gross salary

Natalie Ceeney's gross salary must be nearly £360K if she takes home £190,414.

Overpaid Ombudswomen and men

It is interesting that given the amount bankers get paid the ombudswoman who has faield to investigate so many cases should be rewarded with more salary than the Prime Minister - who at least has not failed to date. I suppose the ombudswoman can claim like footballers and bankers this is the open price in the marketplace. Unfortunately it is out of over taxed peoples tax she is paid - and I expect she has lined herself up with another overpaid job - for underperformance and lack lustre investigationary powers. No wonder she refuses to investigate Nationwide or banks or Arch cru or. . . .
