More than 2,000 extra tax inspectors will be recruited to crack down on tax evasion among the UK's most wealthy, chief secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander has said.

He told the Liberal Democrat conference this would ensure 350,000 top earners paid their "fair share" of tax, the BBC reports.

Alexander said a crackdown on tax evasion and avoidance announced a year ago was working, with £2bn set to be raised this year with a target of £7bn by 2015.

There already exists a special unit within the Inland Revenue to focus on the tax arrangements of the wealthiest 5,000 people in the UK.

But the new staff will be employed to scrutinise the accounts of an additional 350,000 people who each have a total wealth of more than £2.5m.

Alexander said: "It took 12 years for the previous government to take action against the wealthiest 5,000 people, some of who weren't paying their fair share of tax.

"We can do better than that.

"My message to the small minority who don't pay what they owe is simple. I agree with the chancellor. We will find you and your money and you will pay your fair share."

Lib Dem claptrap

What is fair about a wealthy individual having to pay more for the same services as a less well off person ? If you earn more you pay more tax anyway - even if the tax rate was equitable for all. If you live in a bigger house you pay more poll tax but your local policing doesn't improve and the street lighting and refuse collection (if it happens)is the same as for the poor people. And the more well off often pay for private schooling and private health care - so they pay twice and help relieve the pressure on the NHS and State school system. I'm an ordinary individual earning £50k a year and live in typical suburbia so I'm not trying to defend myself with these comments. I just want to know how Alexander, along with 650 other expense-fiddling MPs can spout this self-righteous crap about fairness. I would also ask this moralising Scot what is fair about English tax payers subsidising the cost of education, health and social benefits to Scottish citizens ?
