Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is targeting 2,500 doctors and dentists in its latest crackdown on tax evasion.

The Revenue will send practitioners letters warning them to pay up what they owe within 21 days or face prosecution, the BBC reports.

The latest move is the second of a two-part operation targeting medical professionals.

HMRC originally offered doctors and dentists discounted penalty rates to come forward and put their tax affairs in order, and is now following up with threats of legal action for those who ignored the offer.

Locum agencies, drug companies and medical insurance firms supplied information to HMRC to help in the crackdown.

This operation is the latest in a line of niche initiatives. In October, HMRC announced it would target tax evasion by UK residents with substantial properties abroad.
