Advisers with clients planning to work or live abroad should remain vigilant when it comes to health insurance needs. The UAE has announced a new medical test regime for expats.
Under the new test regime, any expat wanting to work in the UAE must be tested for HIV/AIDS, syphilis and pulmonary TB. Housemaids and nannies must submit to a pregnancy test, while all kindergarten school employees, barbers, health club workers and restaurant employees must be proven free of hepatitis B.
In addition many countries require that expatriates must take out comprehensive healthcare cover before arriving, as it is a prerequisite for a working visa.
David Pryor, senior executive direct at MediCare International also warns advisers to consider the location when it comes to the type of cover required. He gives the example of a client in Malaysia who had a simple trapped nerve, but his medical fees exceeded £30,000.
“The standards of diagnosis and treatment in the larger centres are world class, however the position in some of the remoter areas of Malaysia is more complex and costs can be high. You should therefore always remember to read your policy carefully to ensure you are covered for likely eventualities, including evacuation cover,” explains Pryor.
For everyone travelling to live and work in Malaysia, before arriving in the country, you must make sure you are immunised against Hepatitis A and B, typhoid, yellow fever and Japanese Encephalitis, particularly if you will be living or travelling to rural areas. Being aware of the types of locations you will be required to work in or visit is an essential part of choosing the right healthcare policy and that it includes emergency evacuation, advises Pryor.
