It may be a delicate subject, but it is often left to financial advisers to remind clients of their mortality.

All manner of helpful products may assist estate management trusts, offshore companies, and last Will & Testaments.

Advisers with clients moving abroad may want to raise the subject of funeral arrangements should the worst happen and death occurs in another land.

According to funeral plan provider Avalon, such advanced planning is on the increase and sales of its Paradise Plan have recently “soared”.

Today, the average cost of a basic funeral in the UK is £2,622. Add in personal touches, such as a church service and flowers, and prices can reach well over £3,000.

When deaths occur overseas, the practical and legal issues that arise become much more complicated.

Avalon offers a funeral plan which provides dual certification at a fixed rate of £3,495.

This ensures plan-holders are covered in the UK and abroad. Cover with a plan of equal value is open to retirees in key destinations including Spain, Portugal, Turkey and Cyprus.

Avalon Director Clare Cooper said, “Planning a funeral abroad involves a large amount of communication with different countries often in different languages.  Buying a pre-paid funeral plan virtually eliminates this worry and also safeguards against rising costs.

This means that families of retirees won’t be burdened with expensive funeral costs when they are gone.

And with nest eggs at an all time low  it appears financial preparation has never been more important.”
