Spain has remained the most popular choice for expat retirees looking for a place in the sun, Standard Life has found.

This year's favourite retirement spots, in order of popularity, are Spain, Australia, the USA, France and Ireland.

This compares to 2010's top five, which were Spain, France, the USA, Canada and Ireland.

John Lawson, head of pensions policy at Standard Life, said: "Retiring abroad is a dream for many people, but does require careful planning and advice."

He said retirees moving abroad should consider the cost of living, tax laws and changes needed to their state pension.
