Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has begun disciplinary procedures against the whistleblower who spoke out over its alleged tax deal with Goldman Sachs.
In October Dave Harnett, permanent tax secretary at HMRC, faced questions from MPs over the alleged deal the revenue struck with Goldman Sachs regarding its tax bill.
HMRC solicitor Osita Mba claimed the department wrote off Goldman's £10m tax bill in a secret deal, the Guardian reports.
Mba claimed the deal was illegal and informed the National Audit Office and two Parliamentary committees of his concerns under whistleblower legislation.
Harnett has since admitted the arrangement with Goldman was a mistake, but denied it was an illegal "sweetheart deal".
HMRC has now launched an inquiry into Mba's conduct, which could end with him losing his job and facing prosecution for revealing sensitive information.

Sensetive for whom? The former head got to walk the plank; Hartnett should have been pushed. This guy is not alone in his voicing disquiet. If my memory serves me correctly, the most senior HMRC solicitor told Hartnett that he Hartnett had circumvented normal policy by cutting the deal direct and without referral. This guy should be praised by governement Hartnett and GoldenBalls should be in the dock
